Uncharted Waters III: Costa del SolThe classic Japanese Macintosh game in English, with its music from MP3 files and no CD needed, on Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.
Uncharted Waters III: Costa del Sol (大航海時代III Costa del Sol, KOEI) is the third of KOEI's games of the Age of Discovery. From 1480 you are a captain: you find a sponsor, take on a crew and ships, and sail out to trade, to explore and to make discoveries, with naval battles and duels on the way. Its 27 pieces of music play from the CD. The Macintosh edition came out in 1997, only in Japanese.
Here it is as a PowerPC Macintosh can play it today: in English, with the CD's audio replaced by MP3 playback, so the music plays under emulation and from a hard disk, and starting without its CD. It runs on Mac OS 9, and on Mac OS X 10.4 as a native application without Classic. The Japanese edition with the same changes is here too.
English edition 1.2 Delivered 2026-10-16 (Mac OS 9) and 2026-10-17 (Mac OS X)
The MP3 edition in English: the conversations and events, the menus and buttons, the status bars, the names of ports, people, goods and discoveries, the messages, and the help file with its viewer. The English is a machine translation, corrected by hand on the screens that were tried. The game still starts without its CD and plays its music from MP3 files.

- Mac OS 9: a PowerPC Macintosh with Mac OS 9.2, QuickTime 6, and Japanese Mac OS or Apple's Japanese Language Kit (the game checks for it). It can sit beside the Japanese edition.
- Mac OS X: 10.4 on a PowerPC Mac; no Classic environment is used, and nothing has to be installed. It runs the same game code as the Mac OS 9 image, and saves the same files.
- The help file's pictures: 25 are screenshots of the English game. 27 others, of the battles, duels, card game, exchange, shipyard and sea maps, still show Japanese. The game's own pictures have no Japanese text.
- Tried under emulation (Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X 10.4.11 in QEMU), not yet on a real Macintosh.
Japanese edition, MP3 1.0 Delivered 2026-10-15 (Mac OS 9) and 2026-10-17 (Mac OS X)
The original Japanese game as installed from its CD, with two changes. It plays its music from 27 MP3 files through QuickTime, in place of the CD's audio tracks, so the music plays under emulation and from a hard disk. And it starts without its CD. The Data and Movie folders are the CD's, file for file.

- Mac OS 9: a PowerPC Macintosh with Mac OS 9.2, QuickTime 6, and Japanese Mac OS or Apple's Japanese Language Kit for the game's text. The game saves into its Data folder, so play it from a hard disk.
- Mac OS X: 10.4 on a PowerPC Mac; no Classic environment is used, and nothing has to be installed: Mac OS X has the Japanese fonts. It runs the same game code as the Mac OS 9 image, and saves the same files.
- Tried under emulation (Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X 10.4.11 in QEMU), not yet on a real Macintosh. On a 68K Macintosh the game still asks for its CD.
