Uncharted Waters III: Costa del SolThe classic Japanese Macintosh game in English, with its music from MP3 files and no CD needed, on Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.

Uncharted Waters III: Costa del Sol (大航海時代III Costa del Sol, KOEI) is the third of KOEI's games of the Age of Discovery. From 1480 you are a captain: you find a sponsor, take on a crew and ships, and sail out to trade, to explore and to make discoveries, with naval battles and duels on the way. Its 27 pieces of music play from the CD. The Macintosh edition came out in 1997, only in Japanese.

Here it is as a PowerPC Macintosh can play it today: in English, with the CD's audio replaced by MP3 playback, so the music plays under emulation and from a hard disk, and starting without its CD. It runs on Mac OS 9, and on Mac OS X 10.4 as a native application without Classic. The Japanese edition with the same changes is here too.

The game's music is 27 tracks of CD audio on its disc, after the game's data. The MP3 edition plays the same recordings from its Music folder.

The files keep the CD's track numbers: track 1 of the CD is the game's data. The titles are KOEI's, from the 大航海時代 30th-anniversary soundtrack set of 2021, the first release of this music: 24 of these tracks are recordings of that set, the same length to the CD sector. Three have no exact match there. The set's Opening, Initial Setting, Tavern, Ending and Game Over are the candidates.

Where the tracks come from

They were cut from the image of the Macintosh CD (Daemon Tools, as Macintosh Garden has it) and compared with Redump's dump of the same disc (Redump 103489): all 27 tracks are the same, bit for bit. The MP3s are 192 kbit/s, made from those copies.

How the MP3 edition plays them

The game still chooses each track, when it repeats and when it stops. Its CD-audio routines (start, play, stop with a fade, pause, resume, and the question whether a track is playing) now play the MP3 of the same track through QuickTime. Every piece repeats except one short one, track 8. A track repeats with a gap of about 2 seconds, as it did from the CD. While the game is in the background, the music pauses.

If the music cannot open, the game shows one alert and goes on without music.
